Building Inspiration

Along with over a hundred Facilities Managers, Sean Moran (The Ark, Building Manager) and I recently attended the FM Inspired Conference at the Intercontinental O2 Hotel in London. This is a regular event where professionals get together to share knowledge, learn new ideas and meet solution providers. The format involved a series of workshops led by some of the sector’s leading innovators.

The key themes were Collaboration, Workplace Productivity, Sustainability and FM Relationships. We were also able to select workshop presentations that reflected our areas of interest and expertise. Sean and I took part in sessions on:

• Contracts in Health and Safety
• High Performing Facilities Teams
• Business Continuity Planning
• Radical Sustainability
• Workplace Productivity.

I especially enjoyed the Radical Sustainability session, which was led by Ramon Arratia. He is Director of Sustainability at Interface EMEA and Senior Associate at the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership. He is also the author of a book on the subject: Full Product Transparency.

His session was very inspiring because of the way he addressed the practical difficulties of making sustainability a reality.
‘Don’t be afraid,’ was his message. ‘If you know you’re right, just push on and others will follow’. He involved everyone in the session and really brought home to us the importance of green issues and how the changes would benefit our businesses in the long run.

Between sessions we spent time networking in an open room with different contractors and service providers.

Registration started at 8am and we finished with a drinks reception around 5.30pm. However, there was also plenty of time for networking, as well as breaks for breakfast and lunch.

I recommend this event to facilities managers and building managers as well as surveyors and architects. However, to get the most out of it, attendees should do a little research in advance and book themselves into the most relevant sessions.
